Thanksgiving Recipe to Try with Kids
Cranberry Sauce, a Thanksgiving staple and a recipe that is as fun to make as it is delicious to eat. This is a great recipe to make with the kids and only requires a few ingredients:
12 ounces Fresh Cranberries
3/4 cups Granulated Sugar
1 Tablespoon Loosely Packed Orange Zest
1/2 cup Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice
1 stick Cinnamon
Kids will love watching the cranberries pop while they stir the cranberries and mixture. So let’s get started...
Zest the orange (this may be something for the parent to do)
Sort through the cranberries (great job for kids, remove any squishy cranberries, rinse well and add to a 4 quart sauce pan.
Cut an orange in half and juice into a separate dish (about half a cup) - don’t forget to take out the seeds
Add orange juice, sugar, cinnamon stick and 1/2 cup water to the pan of cranberries.
Stir the mixture over medium-high heat.
Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 15 minutes - stirring the mixture every 5 minutes to ensure it doesn't burn but that the cranberries get soft and the sugar dissolves. Use a clear lid so you can watch the cranberries begin to pop - yes!
Once the cranberries have begun to soften, sprinkle in the orange zest, reserving a few teaspoons for garnish. Stir, bring back to a rolling simmer and turn heat down to medium.
Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes and transfer to a pretty dish.
Garnish the cranberry sauce with the reserved orange zest.
