Poparazzi: The Social Media App That's Redefining Traditional Platforms
Do you love posting photos of yourself on social media? If not, then you'll love Poparazzi – the social media app that's redefining traditional platforms. Unlike other apps, users on Poparazzi can only share photos on their friends' profiles. This unique rule is designed to showcase "the real you" by your real friends. So far, it's been working – Poparazzi has amassed a large following of Gen Z users who are looking for an alternative to traditional social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
5 million downloads in App Store in one year
Poparazzi, which debuted in the iTunes App Store last year and rose to No. 1 almost immediately, has been rapidly scaled since then. The unexpected and "extremely daunting" rise compelled Poparazzi to hire faster and expand from four to 15 people, according to CEO, Alex Ma. Since its launch, the app has been downloaded 5 million times.
While it's still early days for Poparazzi, the app shows promise as a unique and refreshing take on social media. If you're tired of the same old platforms, check out Poparazzi – you might just find your new favourite way to share photos online.
Poparazzi is a mobile app aimed at teenagers and young adults (users must be at least 12 years old to register). Poparazzi's active users are mostly under 21, with more than 75% between 14 and 18 years old. This is due to consumers truly being interested in sharing pictures rather than lurking or remaining anonymous as a result.
Need for a new social media
“Instagram and TikTok are not really a place for friends to just be friends with each other anymore,” Ma said. “1% of people are creating content for 99% of people. And then 99% of people don't feel like their content, or their lives, are worth sharing.
Poparazzi has no way of knowing the identity of the person who took a photo. The app also doesn't have profiles, and photos cannot be tagged with locations. It’s clear that Gen Z doesn’t want to use the social platforms its parents do. Facebook’s daily active users dipped for the first time at the end of last year (though it recently bounced back slightly*).
The notion of being judgmental has grown obsolete. Automate your marketing, and you'll stop wasting time on dogpiling, which is where you show videos or photos of yourself doing something so other people will like them. "Gen Z doesn't feel that they have a safe space on the internet to simply be themselves without any social pressure," Ma tells.
Attention in the sector
Apps that stand out from the crowd by breaking away from social media norms have been able to attract top talent and venture capital investment. Poparazzi, for example, was able to recruit Instagram, Snap, and Facebook employees; earlier this month, the firm also raised $15 million in a series of financing.
Poparazzi is just one of many social media apps that are trying to catch Gen Z’s attention. But it’s clear that Poparazzi is resonating with users – and it may be because it’s offering something that traditional platforms don’t: a space for users to be themselves.
“The Poparazzi team understands their target audience and wants to provide Gen Z with a platform that reflects their beliefs while also relieving them of their social media stress,” Alexia Tsotsis, founder and managing director at Dream Machine, said. “They hit the ground running and have the momentum and resources they need to build for a future where social is more social, not less media.”
Poparazzi has yet to finish developing its business model and promises to never run advertisements. Ma states, “When platforms start displaying a lot of advertising, the product is no longer reliable.” The platform may generate money by selling branded items or hosting events for its users, rather than the platform's users themselves. However, those negotiations are still in their early phases.
For now, Poparazzi is focused on continuing to grow its user base and expanding its team. The app is available for download on the App Store and Google Play.
